ya gotta remember, nobody ever did anything before Tesla did it.
“but they’re just a startup!” you bleat. no, they’re not. this is their fourth vehicle, their third mass-produced one. They took on a bunch of talent who knew how to build cars in 2005-2008 when Detroit was shedding jobs, and ignored and burned those people out. then they act like they can do it better, then when they can’t they act like they’re awesome because they can just barely get to the level of everyone else.
Tesla is the “12 year old boy” of car companies. Believes he’s smarter than everyone else, believes he’s the first to ever think of something, and repeats everyone else’s mistakes because he’s too stupid to listen.

That about sums it up.

Not to mention, the build quality should be awesome at that production rate. Must be busy times in the tent.
That 12 year old reminds me of someone.

That is an excellent analogy.

According to Manwich their build quality is better than those “European” cars.
I was going to respond, but I didn’t have time to address such a statement.
As much as I don’t like anything that’s not German, I have NEVER seen a car from any established automaker that had panel gaps or panel inconsistencies so large that I can see them in my rearview mirror.
But yeah, Teslas are better than “European” cars.

There’s a point to be made about how Tesla made electric cars work (far) better than anyone else. Even Ford, despite all their volume, all their money.

I would agree on that, and as much as I find their nearly cult-like following strange, I think they wouldn’t be nearly as successful in that endeavor if they didn’t have a leader like Musk.

yea much bigger than cars so even more impressive

I don’t see any reputable sources complaining about Euro lux build quality, either. Mainstream mags have been raving about MB build quality lately (ICE sometimes still perplexes).
In my opinion, the reality of the brand is you buy a cool powertrain and get somewhat boring design and inconsistent build quality for free. The materials don’t seem especially posh either. The fanbase will act like it is some kind of S65 and Phantom hybrid that runs on air.
I think the tax gift is set to expire soon, too, I wonder if that will have impact.

I’ve never actually been in one yet. I think I should go up to Santa Barbara and try one. Now that I have a BEV I can BS them and say I’m looking for one with more range.
I doubt the tax credit will have much of an impact. Maybe if they actually built the 35k model. But they never will. And with the cars being well north of 40k, people can generally afford the “extra” 7500. But I will say I probably would have waited longer for my e-Golf if I didn’t get $7500 from the feds and $2500 back from California.

Not just work, but they pretty much single-handedly brought electric cars into “desirable” territory. I think people are forgetting that before the model S was unveiled, m ost non car people imagined Prius’ when “electric car” was mentioned.

If you look at an S, prepare for C-class/3er luxury at a nearly S-class price, also with 2010 era MB switchgear.
I imagine a lot of the cult are pedantic cheapskates - some seem to be Prius people with a little more money, so they might pitch a fit when the tax break expires. I don’t have an issue with it when it is attached to mainstream cars like yours, but when it is applied to a 100K toy for the top few percent, it seems wrong to me.

I haven’t been in a recent gen C Class in a long time, but the 3 Series is still as disappointing as ever. I do smogs for the BMW dealer so I do cars with 500 miles, 5k miles, and off lease. They don’t hold up and they don’t feel nice.
The owners are I met are very well off, but they're cheap and they always ask me for a discount on smogs, or they take their regular cars to the cheapest shops in town. But they think they have the greatest car in the world.

I think MB interiors are usually a step up from BMW, but neither C nor 3 should be in a 90K car.
There’s definitely some Kool-Aid drinkers in the fan ranks. They just have to be reaffirmed that they made a good choice, and will tell everyone about it. These are the vegans and crossfitters of the automotive world.

Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt.
Both work great and both are affordable. T here is also no wait.

The Bolt came years later. The Chevy electric car of the time was the Volt. Which was pathetic.
The Leaf too. It might have beaten Tesla to the punch, but it wasn’t very good. It sold more than the Tesla S but I’d call it a failure. It didn’t change the world like Tesla did - it was just barely good enough and far too expensive.
